Welcome to Willpower Learning Institute!

Welcome to Willpower Learning Institute!

In 2013, we opened Willpower Learning Institute in Kameoka, Kyoto, for the purpose of cultivating "global citizens" who accept diversity through English and art. Our philosophy is to foster compassion for each other and develop the ability to learn by ourselves to enrich our lives, cherishing each day. Currently, the number of motivated students has increased due to active self-challenge in certification examinations and participation in various contests. We even have some graduates who have bravely stepped out into the world.

I myself officially started “global citizenship activities” in 1990 after graduating from a local high school. It may sound cool but it wasn't that I was motivated but the fact that I had nowhere to go. When I was in high school, I was absorbed in extracurricular activities and didn't listen to the advice of others. Not surprisingly, I failed college entrance examinations and when I was at a loss for what to do from then on, my parents suggested "studying abroad". Ignoring the fact that I didn’t like and wasn’t good at English, my curiosity and desire “to see a new world!" was stirred anyway. And that was a big turning point that changed me.

After entering university, I came to know the fun of “learning in English”. When learning in English, the perspective from which I had been looking changed dramatically and I saw a completely different world. Even my aversion to math, in which I got a “1” back in high school, disappeared and I was able to see it as a completely different thing. In the end, I surprised myself by getting a "B".

Also, learning in the United States was a game-changer that I had never experienced before. The discussion- and research-centered classes were very interesting, so I just proceeded with the assignments, forgetting that I was learning in English. English has become an important tool for me to learn new things. In university I was able to immediately ask the professors questions about things that I didn’t understand upon which they would give lots of advice. When I shared my realizations, I got a lot of reactions from my classmates. There was an environment where we respected each other's learning and grew together.

Even as the days went by, that feeling of joy and satisfaction remained in the corner of my heart. The desire to feel that again, that time came in 2016. I was able to learn about bilingual education through an American online graduate school. Weekly paper submissions and discussions were very time-consuming for a housewife working full-time. However, it has been a precious two-and-a-half years to carefully analyze, remembering my own English learning and using what is actually occurring in classrooms as a theme.

When I think about it, life has been full of failures but thinking back, perhaps my parents, who were educators, saw ahead and gave me, who was constantly rebelling and didn’t listen to anyone, a chance. Based on that experience, what Willpower can do is support everyone's learning over a long span of time while connecting it to 10 or 20 years later in the future.

Besides English lessons, we have also made the most of an interpretation and translation business, educational guidance, etc. By creating a learning community with everyone in the community, and with everyone with whom we will connect online from now, I hope that it will become a circle of happiness which spreads widely.

Tips
